By Imperial Decree: Chancery Edicts and Danubian Packet Movements as Reported in the Wiener Zeitung, This 12th Day of October, 1841

From the Imperial Chancery in Vienna, the Wiener Zeitung of this date records a series of decrees touching upon the regulation of the Danubian packet service. The steam-packet 'Ferdinand' is listed to depart from the Schwedenplatz landing at six o'clock in the morning, bound for Pest with a cargo of salt, ironware, and official dispatches. The tariff schedule appended to the same gazette fixes the duty upon each measure of grain at three kreuzer, a figure unchanged since the last revision of the commercial code in the year 1838. Such minutiae, though dry to the casual reader, form the very sinews of our borderland economy.

Of greater moment to the antiquarian is the notice of a chancery decree concerning the preservation of provincial archives. It commands that all municipal records within the Crownlands be inventoried and stored in fireproof vaults, a measure long overdue. I have myself witnessed the lamentable state of the archives at Kronstadt, where the damp has reduced a sheaf of fourteenth-century charters to a mere pulp. The decree, though tardy, is a welcome salve to those of us who labour in the crypts and scriptoria.

The commercial gazette further reports the arrival of the packet 'Argo' from Galatz, laden with hides, tallow, and a consignment of Greek manuscripts destined for the University library. The customs officials at the quarantine station have assessed the value of the said manuscripts at a mere twelve gulden, a valuation that betrays a profound ignorance of their true worth. I have dispatched a note to the librarian, urging immediate inspection lest the volumes be dispersed by the ignorant.

Let it be recorded, therefore, that while the Empire busies itself with tariffs and packet schedules, the true wealth of the realm lies in its crumbling parchments. The chronicler's duty is to rescue what he can from the devouring maw of time, and to set it down in these columns for the edification of posterity.
