Word has reached this office by way of packet ship and overland courier of a most audacious enterprise in the far southern latitudes. The Chilean government, desirous of securing its rightful dominion over the fabled Strait of Magellan—that labyrinthine waterway first navigated by the Portuguese mariner in the year 1520—has dispatched the schooner Ancud under the command of Captain John Williams Wilson to take formal possession of those desolate shores.
