Carpathian Meteorological Chronicle: The Storm Cloudbank's Pall

The waning crescent moon, a ghostly sliver, was wholly devoured by the advancing storm cloudbank, leaving the firmament a churning abyss of slate and ink. A light mountain mist, like the exhalation of the earth itself, coiled through the pines and clung to the observatory's stone, while the mercury in my barometer sank to 29.75 inches, falling slowly but with ominous persistence. The wind, a gentle North-Northeast breeze of 4 knots, carried the scent of rain and the distant rumble of thunder, a herald of the tempest to come.

Within the observatory, the hair-hygrometer registered a creeping dampness, and the thermometer stood at 50Β°F, its dew point a chilly 40Β°F, foretelling the condensation that would soon veil the peaks. The storm clouds, heavy with portent, obscured all celestial bodies, and the darkness seemed to press against the glass like a living thing. I noted the falling barometer with a scholar's disquiet, for such a steady descent often precedes the mountain's wilder moods.

As dusk deepened, the mist thickened in the valleys, and the wind's whisper grew to a mournful sigh. Travelers upon the Carpathian passes would be wise to seek shelter, for the omensβ€”the swallowed moon, the sinking mercury, the creeping mistβ€”all speak of a night when the elements conspire against the unwary. The storm cloudbank, relentless and brooding, promises a tempest that shall test the stoutest heart.
