Royal Meteorological Chronicle: Gothic Mountain Stillness

A pallid sun, veiled by a thin gauze of cloud that permits but two-and-forty parts in a hundred of its disc to trespass upon the grey, struggles to illumine the frosted limestone peaks, where a light mountain mistβ€”not yet coalesced into fogβ€”eddies in the hollows like the breath of the earth itself. The mercury in my barometer stands immovable at nine-and-twenty inches and six-and-eighty hundredths, a steadiness that speaks of no imminent squall; yet the air, though calm to the west at a mere three knots, carries the chill of the tomb, the thermometer lingering at seven-and-forty degrees of Fahrenheit, while the dew point at two-and-forty hints at moisture that may yet thicken into a shroud for the unwary traveler. The black pines in the ravine below shiver not from wind but from some deeper tremor, as if the mountain itself were holding its breath.
