Royal Meteorological Chronicle: Gothic Mountain Stillness
From the Kneeling Glen, a spectral mist uncoiled itself in slow, deliberate spirals, creeping upward through the black pines whose needles shivered with a preternatural chill. The limestone peaks, frosted with the first breath of autumn's decay, stood as jagged sentinels against a sky of crystalline clarityโonly a fifth of heaven's vault obscured by cloud. At 22:00, the mercury in my barometer held its ground at 29.94 inches, steady as a heartbeat in a crypt, while the thermometer registered 49ยฐF (9ยฐC; 7.4ยฐR), the dew point lurking at 41ยฐF (4.8ยฐC)โa proximity that whispered of moisture waiting to condense into phantom shapes.
The wind, a mere zephyr from the west at three knots, scarcely stirred the observatory's anemometer, yet it carried the scent of distant snow and ancient stone. Calm air, such as this, often precedes the mountain's darker moods; the waxing gibbous moon, visible and luminous, cast its pallid glow upon the mist, weaving illusions among the ravines. No fog of dense opacity, but a light mountain mist that clings to hollows and่ฎฐๅฟ of the dead, ethereal yet unsettling.
For travelers braving the Carpathian passes tonight, I counsel vigilance: the stillness is deceptive, a velvet glove over an iron hand. The steady barometer promises no immediate squall, but the moon's cold eye and the mist's soft fingers may lure the unwary into treacherous bogs. Let them carry lanterns and charms, for in this Gothic Mountain Stillness, the boundary between the natural and the supernatural grows perilously thin.
