Mercurial Dread: The Waxing Crescent's Ominous Stillness Over Scarlet Ridge

A troubled stillness reigns o'er the Carpathian fastness this morn, as if the very mountains hold their breath. Through the casement of my observatory, the sky presents a mottled countenanceβ€”partly sunny, yet with sixty-six parts in a hundred obscured by clouds that drift like funeral shrouds. A light mountain mist clings to the lower slopes, not dense enough to warrant the fog bell, but sufficient to lend a ghostly veil to the pines. The thermometer stands at a moderate 64 degrees Fahrenheit, though the dew point of 56 foretells a rising dampness that may seep into the bones of unwary travelers. My hair-hygrometer, that delicate instrument of human origin, betrays a swelling in the strandsβ€”a sure sign of increasing moisture in the air. The mercury in my barometer has descended to 29.81 inches, and continues its slow, inexorable fall, whispering of atmospheric perturbations yet to manifest. The wind, a mere breath from the northwest at three knots, offers no solace, for it is the calm that precedes the stormβ€”or so the old wives of the valley would have it. The moon, a waxing crescent, remains hidden behind the cloudy veil, her pale light absent from the firmament, leaving the night to come in utter darkness. Coachmen would do well to light their lanterns early, and those who must traverse the high passes should heed the silence, for it is the silence of a predator.
