The Fall of the Mountain Prince: Bashir Shihab II Surrenders to the Sublime Porte, and the Exile's Road to Malta

From our Overseas Correspondent, late of the Levantine packet.

Word has reached this office by way of the Constantinople mail that the Emir Bashir Shihab II, for near half a century the undisputed master of the Lebanon, has at last laid down his arms before the Sublime Porte. The surrender was not on the field of battle, but in the marble chambers of the Ottoman admiral at Beirut, where the old Prince, his beard whitened by winters on the Mountain, signed away his sovereignty with a hand that witnesses describe as steady, though his eyes were said to be those of a man who has seen his last dawn. The Porte, in its infinite and inscrutable wisdom, has decreed exileโ€”not to the gallows, but to the island of Malta, that rocky sentinel of the Middle Sea.

The Emir's journey from the cedars to the sea was one of solemn pageantry and quiet ruin. He embarked at Beirut upon a corvette of the Sultan's navy, his personal guard reduced to a handful of faithful mountaineers, their silver-mounted jezails gleaming dully under a clouded autumn sky. The Christian Maronites, who for generations had looked to him as both prince and protector, lined the quays in silence, their grief unspoken but palpable. It is said that the Emir, before stepping aboard, turned once to gaze upon the snow-capped ridges of his homeland, and then, without a word, descended into the vessel's dark hold.

Let this serve as a caution to all travellers in the Eastern passes: the roads of power are as treacherous as the winter tracks of the Borgo. The Emir's fateโ€”from palace to prison-isleโ€”is a reminder that even the mightiest fortresses may crumble, and that the exile's road is long and without return. The Malta packet sails with the next favourable wind, bearing a prince who once ruled mountains, now bound for a limestone rock in a foreign sea.
